I cant connect to the public server it says      Internal Exception:  io.netty.handler.timeout.ReadTimeoutException

This is because the server crashed. The players shown to be on are the players that were on when it crashed. Just wait for the automatic restart, or wait for John to restart it if it doesn't automatically restart.
