This is because the public server crashed. If players are on when it crashes, the players are shown to be online. This is called 'ghosting' 

Some people say it's because the players' souls are trapped...

 how do i get back on

You have to wait for the automatic restart. Or if it doesn't restart, wait for John to do it manually.
