[Forums Suggestion] UI improvements Compliation [Posting UI, more]

 Hi all,

So SWDForums is a nice place to post creations, suggestions and more but I feel there are improvements that could be made to make posting more easier, especially for long posts like how ArcPhoenix and I post things.

I would like to make a few suggestions regarding the user interface in the forum, with the following about posting a new thread as I am doing now. (Please tell me if I do not know how to use a certain function or it is already being considered.)

I: Spoilers function

Feature: A handy feature that lets the user hide a large amount of text. Can be useful for crash reports and reducing the size of a long suggestion or FAQ, specially ArcPhoenix's and my own posts which are detailed. Could it be similar to the Minecraft forums/Curse Forums maybe?

 II: Inserting Pictures/videos dialog box

Description:  The ability to add images/video locally ( insert images from your hard drive as a attachment/embedded with text) using a dialog box from the user's operating system. (E.g. Windows, Mac etc.) I believe Reddash mentioned this feature required a web server upgrade as the SWD site will require an uploading system.

Why do you suggest we implement it: At the moment many users have trouble understanding how to insert images into a post. There is a "Insert Images" button, but all images must be uploaded to the internet first, and the image must have a shareable link to paste into the existing system.

 Existing system:

 Proposed new dialog box:

III: Post saves/ Post history versions/Renaming post saves

Description: A handy saving system that display versions of a post that you have saved and allows you to revert back to one of the saves of your post in case something goes wrong.

This also brings me to a post save renaming function.

  • If you edit your post often, you may need to revert it to an earlier state, just like how an operating system has a system image file.
  • Sometimes you have done some major work to your post
    • This save can be lost easily in a pool of dates and times of different states.

Therefore if you need to, you may find a named state easily and revert your post back to it.

E.g. I have completed and saved a major reformat of my Dalek Mod FAQ and need to edit out a grammar mistake, when my computer loses power, without saving the changes.

  • For site staff, they will have an advanced version where they have save histories of all posts.

How do you suggest we implement it: Each time you edit your post (including the version which you have posted) the forums will generate a save of your post.

When you click the "save" button a dialog box will pop up and ask you to name the current save of the post. There will be 2 options:

  • Renaming the save
  • Default (Shows time and date of save)

A button in the post ribbon could have a "Post History" button which when clicked on, shows the Date and time of a post save.

  • It displays versions of a post that you have saved and allows you to revert back to one of the saves of your post in case something goes wrong.

Why do you suggest we implement it: It allows for recovery of a post especially if it got infected with the freezing bug and cut-off bug and allows site staff to revert changes easier.

IV: Table of Contents / Text with certain header types will be listed

Description: Like in Microsoft Word,  a Table of contents may be inserted into your post if it is quite long.

How do you suggest we implement it: Text with a certain heading will be able to be listed in a Table of contents and each phrase of text with the header will have a hyperlink that takes you down to its location in the post

Why do you suggest we implement it: It allows for quicker navigation by readers of a long post ( like ArcPhoenix's suggestions and my Dalek Mod FAQ) without having to scroll down a lot. That and it will help SWD Members/staff process suggestions/ server reports etc, much quicker.

 V: Toggleable Spacing between paragraphs

Description: Like in Microsoft Word,  spacing between paragraphs could have either:

 No spacing between paragraphs:

 Like

This

 Or with spacing:

 Like

This.

How do you suggest we implement it: Add a "Toggle spacing" button with the above two options.

Why do you suggest we implement it: It allows for easier formatting for various posts, instead of having to press "Enter" a number of times.

Hi all,

It's been great the SWD decided to make a forum, it makes posting about their content so much easier in one place! :D I like how the UI is like the Minecraft.Forums interface, but I feel there could be more added to it when SWD Team has time of course.

I would like to make a few suggestions regarding the user interface in the forum, with the following about posting a new thread as I am doing now. (Please tell me if I do not know how to use a certain function or it is already being considered.)

  • A spoiler-like button. A handy feature that lets the user hide a large amount of text. Can be useful for crash reports. Similar to the Minecraft forums/Curse Forums maybe?
  • The ability to add images/video locally ( insert images from your hard drive as a attachment/embedded with text)
  • Maybe an option to enable default font? I quite like it.
  • A post history function. It could display versions of a post that you have saved and allows you to revert back to one of the saves.
  • Being able to toggle the spacing between paragraphs, like the "remove space after paragraph" function in Microsoft Word. I think it will help with general formatting. EDIT: Ok, there's a "div" function which does what I am suggesting in the Format->Blocks but it doesn't seem to work if I edit text in a purple "spoiler" like the one on my FAQ.

Thanks for John and the team for making a Forum section on the site, it makes navigating the SWD site so much more enjoyable, interesting and convenient!

ok their is so much said they my mind is a bit blown surprised

Oh boy, this thread is so bad.. I've reformatted these suggestions, which I feel is greatly needed.

You mean like how the table of contents and in-page hyperlinks to different parts of the text in wiki pages work? If so, I love the idea

I would like to bump this, if any SWD members want to use this post as a reference post.

50ap, you have something wierd is going on with the right border of your main post here.

It's cutting off some of the words/ words don't start on the next line like they should at some places

Fixed. Turns out the font I used for my clipboard was glitched out and wouldn't respond to the change when copying the content over.
