[Reference] How to be described as Staff

As we all know, there are users in the SWD community who are interested in obtaining the staff rank on the DMU servers.

This post is to clarify what it takes to be a "staff member" but DOES NOT, I repeat does not guarantee you obtaining the position.

Contents:

  1. The"Server staff" stereotype-What some think “Staff Means”

  2. What "Staff" actually means:

  3. How can I improve myself as a user?

  4. What you can do to help the community

  5. Role models: Current Server Staff

The"Server staff" stereotype-What some think “Staff Means”

Many users have the impression that being a server staff member means you are either:

Automatically respected by others because of your rank

OR

You get extra perks and can use OP enchanted weapons etc. to beat up offending players.

This is wrong.

The role of a Staff Member:

  • "Staff" is not a rank or title,

  • It is a descriptive word (adjective) to describe someone who has contributed to the community consistently

  • Being "staff" does not mean you sit around killing players, become "cool" or "grown-up", you need to pull your own weight.

  • It is about how much you contribute to the community

    • How unique or useful your contribution is

    • If you consistently do it

This is means not spamming “CAN I HELP” or get involved in staff affairs, like ban appeals. One may however, may notify staff politely about a situation but not make any decisions about the appeal etc, that is up to existing staff.

How can I improve myself as a user? (Qualities of a good staff member)

Being staff does not mean you have to fill a checklist. It can involve a lot of things:

Some basic skills most staff members have are:

  • Using proper English and communication skills. Communication is important.

  • Using common sense. We see this, more or less, generally unused.

  • Being patient and calm. Staff members generally judge a situation according to the evidence and hand, not basing it off their emotions. "I was just angry" is not acceptable, that is the behaviour of an overreacting player.

  • Not swearing. Swearing does not "make you cool" or "grown-up" in any way, it shows one's immaturity than the other way around. Generally, this could still happen on occasion, whether in a conversation with other staff or out of a force of habit. Nonetheless, it should be regarded that we would heavily prefer a clean chat log to be reading.

  • Enforcing rules. Do not, under any circumstance, “shove them down people’s throats” as if you are tired of helping. A more generalized  approach is highly recommended. If you feel as if you cannot assist a user due to personal issues troubling you outside of the server, please ask another staff member if they could handle the situation.

  • Being patient. As a staff member, you are moderating the server, not mocking or attacking users. If the user is new, be patient; do not snap at them.  If you feel you are not being noticed, despite the amount you are helping, you are probably being observed and assessed on your skills.

  • Recommended: Being modest. If you truly enjoy and would like to help the community you don't need to go around trying to get attention in an effort to gain the position. Again if you feel unnoticed, you are likely observed and assessed at all times.

To help the community one could:

  • Answer general questions any new or existing player might have (e: How do I obtain a TARDIS?)

  • Help new players get started (e: Letting that user know that we have a certain system to obtaining a TARDIS via the shops.) Do not snap at new users, they don’t know much of the server/mod. Be patient and answer their questions.

  • Contribute ideas to the community about how to improve certain things (Bug fixes, new ideas, model and texture contributions, etc.)

  • Follow all server rules

    • NOTE: Stating that “I follow all server rules” does not make you eligible for a staff position. As stated above it requires a wide range of skills which you can apply efficiently and consistently.

    • This means you should uphold these qualities even when staff are not online.

  • Take into consideration the age level of the users around you, and be respectful around them. Actions such as swearing, breaking the rules, and generally being a jerk will not be tolerated, and will guarantee that you will have very low chances at becoming a staff member.

  • Staff must be complete and totally fair. Unbiased. Even in dealing with users others might call “annoying”.

Role models: current server staff

This is a reference for those who don’t know who the current server staff are. You may use these staff members as a role model in terms of suitable behavior.

Unless that staff member isn't a good staff member xP

*cough* Shane *cough*

Well he was a constant power abuser

He went into vanish and poured lava and water on an armor stand design I made that took an hour to try and destroy it.
He turned fire tick on to burn down a rival Tardis Interior Shop which in turn caused the spawn to burn down (again).
He was rude all the time.
He disobeyed higher up staff.
He spawned mobs for players.
He purposely made his nickname "The Flash" to annoy me and ignored staff when they said to stop.

That's my reasoning to what I said.

......Ummm Okay then. I've got nothing to say to defend him against those points. Sorry Shane!! I still think you're my friend!!

Shane was extremely childish. Not only he made constant abuse of staff priviliges but he also had several "discussions" with Milk and Ender. There's also the fact that when he lost his staff rank on DMU he moved to the DWCM community, in hope of being welcome there, as if we  were the problem.

please don't start arguing about Shane here, if you want to discuss whether he was a good staff member or whatever, please do it elsewhere, such as Skype

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT ON THE SKYPE GROUP!!!!!!!!!!!! IT SPAMS ME ENOUGH ALREADY!!! x'D

Just a reminder, this is not the place to be discussing other users. It's a reference post for some users.

And 99thDoctor, you earn that respect. Being staff doesn't mean you suddenly get respect, that's what this thread is for. 0-0

The Skype chat is the 8th circle of Hell.
